With the New York Mets having lofty expectations this season, the team should consider making a move for this player.

The New York Mets have not had their expected number of games in the docket as of this writing due to their Opening Weekend series against the Washington Nationals being postponed. While the Mets have only played in six games as of this writing, they are statistically one of the worst hitting teams in the league (.222 cumulative batting average, .667 OPS). That has been a strength of the Mets in recent years.

With the team obviously having lofty expectations this season, as evidenced by the offseason acquisition and eventual signing of shortstop Francisco Lindor, why should the Mets stop there? How about they go through with and trade for a player that has been linked to them throughout the offseason: Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant.

Mets should consider acquiring Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant

The Cubs are in the midst of a crucial year, as they have first baseman Anthony Rizzo, shortstop Javier Baez and Bryant hitting the open market at season’s end. The team did appear to be saving money by not making big splashes in free agency and by trading ace pitcher Yu Darvish to the San Diego Padres. The team tried to hash out a deal with Rizzo this spring, but they gave him a rather laughable offer. Then there is Bryant, whom the team was actually taking trade offers for. One of those teams was the Mets.

According to SNY’sAndy Martino, talks between the Mets and Cubs did not advance past the early phases of negotiations. While a trade prior to the start of the season was ruled out, Martino says that the two could talk again closer to the trade deadline.

When looking at the Cubs so far this season, they are in the same boat as the Mets when it comes to hitting. But one of their bright spots is Bryant, who is slashing .233/.361/.567 while recording two home runs, four RBI, five runs scored, seven hits (four doubles).

If the Mets want to clinch their first postseason berth since 2016, they need to go all out considering they are in the same division as the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies. That is why they should pull off a deal with the Cubs to land Bryant, who probably is not re-signing with the team from the Windy City anyway. Plus, would it hurt the Mets to give ace Jacob deGrom some run support for once?
