NFL Mock Draft: What the first-round looks like if 49ers pass on Mac Jones
By Brad Weiss
Closing out the top-10 is the Dallas Cowboys, who are still in desperate need of help in their defensive backfield. With this pick, the Cowboys bring in Patrick Surtain II, a tremendous talent from Alabama, and one who many consider being the most NFL-ready cornerback in this draft class.
Surtain’s father played in the NFL, so there is no shock value here, and he played at an elite program during his time with the Crimson Tide. The Cowboys are only a few pieces away from getting back to the playoffs, and Surtain helps them fill one of the bigger voids on the defensive side of the ball.
Staying in the NFC East, the No. 11 pick belongs to the New York Giants, who made some solid moves this offseason to improve their offense. With this pick, the Giants continue to add weapons around Daniel Jones, who is entering the biggest season of his career, as he looks to prove he belongs.
With this selection, the Giants add Heisman Trophy-winning wide receiver DeVonta Smith, who is fresh off putting up video game numbers at Alabama this past season. Some feel Smith could be the first wideout off the board, and despite adding Kenny Golladay this offseason, the Giants do not pass on him here.
With pick No. 12 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles are the third consecutive NFC East team to make a selection. Here, the Eagles decide to bolster their secondary, adding South Carolina cornerback Jaycee Horn, who many feel is the second-best cornerback in this draft class.
Horn would fill a major void on this Eagles defense, and with them turning the page on quarterback Carson Wentz, Jalen Hurts will be looking to get this team to the playoffs. Overall, they have the talent to do so, but they need to be better against the pass if they want to win the NFC East.
