Former heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr. returns to the boxing ring against friendly acquaintance Chris Arreola in a FOX PPV event. Here’s how to watch.

Andy Ruiz Jr. returns to the boxing ring for the first time in 17 months since losing his majority share of the heavyweight title to Anthony Joshua via unanimous decision in the December 2019 rematch.

Ruiz (33-2, 22 KOs) shocked the world when he stopped Anthony Joshua in round 7 by TKO to win the WBA, WBO, IBF, and IBO heavyweight titles in June of 2019. He pulled off the massive upset victory with limited time to train. Ruiz replaced Jarrell Miller, who tested positive for multiple banned substances.

In the first Joshua fight, Ruiz weighed 268 pounds. After winning the belts, Ruiz lost his discipline and didn’t apply himself while preparing for the rematch. He came in at 283 pounds for the rematch and was very out of shape.

Ruiz recently told TMZ about the bout of depression he overcame after losing to Joshua.

“I needed to make a change because I was tired of the way I was living,” Ruiz told TMZ.

Ruiz made several changes. He moved on from trainer Manny Robles to Canelo Alvarez’s trainer Eddy Reynoso. He also took his training seriously and made many lifestyle changes. Ruiz came in at 256 pounds for his Saturday, May 1 heavyweight contest against Chris Arreola at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

Ruiz and Arreola know each other and have sparred in the past. Arreola (38-6-1, 33 KOs) lost his last fight to Adam Kownacki in 2019 by decision, but he performed well despite losing. He also took his training for this fight seriously, coming in at a career-low 228.5 pounds.

Both men want to win badly. Here is the televised fight card and how to watch it.
