Zach Plesac’s freak accident leaves Indians rotation extra thin

Rough news has arrived for the Cleveland Indians, as starting pitcher Zach Plesac is heading to the Injured List after suffering a freak injury. 

An unfortunate update arrived for the Cleveland Indians, as manager Terry Francona announced that starting hurler Zach Plesac has suffered a fracture in his right thumb. Because of this, the hard-throwing righty will of course be heading to the Injured List.

What make things worse here, however, is that Plesac suffered the accident in a complete and total freak accident. Per Francona, Plesac hurt himself after ‘aggressively’ trying to take off his shirt and it got caught on a chair. You can’t make this stuff up.

To get injured and miss some time is one thing, but doing so due to a clothing mishap is almost unbelievable. It’s also just incredibly unlucky for the Indians and Francona. Plesac has been strong this year, posting a 4-3 record with a 4.14 ERA.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder has won two of his last three starts, highlighted by a dominant performance against the Seattle Mariners on May 13. In that victory, Plesac tossed eight innings, giving up only two hits and two earned runs.

Now, though, he’ll have to attack his rehab in hopes of getting back on the bump sooner rather than later. For the Indians, they’re currently 1.5 games back of the Chicago White Sox for first place in the AL Central standings. With this race expected to be neck and neck throughout the rest of the campaign, fans are ready to see Cleveland try and overtake Tony La Russa’s crew. In order for that to happen, the club will need Plesac back in action as soon as possible.
