The Lincoln Riley to LSU rumors refuse to go away, and are only getting stronger
By John Buhler
Some LSU football fans are all-in on the idea of Lincoln Riley becoming the Tigers next head coach.
With the LSU football program in the toilet, Tigers fans are convinced that only Lincoln Riley can save them.
Riley has a cushy job leading the Oklahoma Sooners, but with the Big 12 powerhouse eventually joining the SEC, the time might be now to get out ahead of this thing. LSU has reportedly offered Riley a massive contract to replace Ed Orgeron in Baton Rouge. While some could see him leaving Norman as a bit of a lateral move, money talks and that is what it will take to pry Riley away.
LSU fans are losing their minds over the possibility of getting the Oklahoma head coach to lead the Bayou Bengals on future fall Saturday.
They are relentlessly tracking flights between Norman, Oklahoma and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
They are using connections within the oil industry as validation that Riley is calling Baton Rouge.
Some even believe Riley skips town on Oklahoma if the Sooners fall in Bedlam on Saturday.
Some LSU football fans believe Lincoln Riley will leave Oklahoma for Tigers gig
While Riley may have denied his interest in the LSU job earlier in November, it was nowhere as vehement of a denial as what Jimbo Fisher had before him at Texas A&M. So what would the interest be in leaving a sweet gig at Oklahoma for another great one at LSU? Two reasons: Better in-state talent and possibly a higher payday. These two things will matter for someone like Riley.
In the Big 12, Riley can win all the conference championships he wants, but when has that translated to a single victory in the College Football Playoff? While Oklahoma does just fine with its Texas-laden recruiting base, most top high school players in Louisiana want to play for the Bayou Bengals at Death Valley. Plus, the last three LSU head coaches all won national titles there.
Though Riley may be invested at Oklahoma in the long-term, a road loss to Oklahoma State in Bedlam certainly throws a wrench in all this and makes things very interesting.
