Carlos Correa returning to Astros has new life
For a while it looked like Carlos Correa would be leaving the Astros as a free agent but Houston is now back in discussions with the star shortstop.
The Astros aren’t giving up on keeping Carlos Correa in Houston.
Despite serious interest from potential and the shortstop reportedly putting his house on sale, Houston isn’t out of the running just yet. They just reopened discussions with the shortstop, per Mark Berman of Fox 26.
“Our team has reached out to his agent. We’re in discussions,” owner Jim Crane told Berman this week.
Astros can still re-sign Carlos Correa
Correa is reportedly interested in a contract worth more than $300 million over 10 years. Corey Seager signed with the Rangers for 10 years and $325 million, so there’s a target for the shortstop to pursue.
There has been talk of the Astros offering a shorter-term contract to Correa at $160 million over five years. He’d make $32 million per year, which would put him close to Seager, but the length of the contract definitely limits the money he’s locked in to receive.
According to Buster Olney of ESPN, Correa rejected a 10-year, $275 million offer from the Tigers already.
On one hand, that proves there are teams out there trying to give Correa that long-term deal. However, the figure being below $300 million could be a good sign for the Astros.
If Correa’s ultimate goal is to hit that mark but another team doesn’t come through with an offer of that size, he could be convinced to re-sign with Houston and try again for his big payday later.
It helps Houston’s cause that the Yankees just pulled off a huge trade for
After the deal was revealed, Bob Nightengale tweeted that the trade “shows that the #Yankees are sticking to their plan all along and have no intention of signing free agent shortstop Carlos Correa or Trevor Story.”
The more teams exit the race for Correa, the more likely he is to stay put.
