Yankees: 5 fatal flaws that could come back to bite them
By Tim Boyle
4. Relying on home runs is going to bite the Yankees hard, again
The Yankees are fully capable of hitting a ton of home runs. Judge and Stanton should be in the mix to lead the American League in this category each season Even Gallo and all of his flaws should be able to hit a massive amount on a regular basis.
Playing 81 games in a ballpark that can favor hitters at times, it’s wise to always have at least a few sluggers on the team.
However, the Yankees have continually gotten more reliant on home runs over the years. Other than DJ LeMahieu, they haven’t been too keen on bringing in contact-first hitters. Sitting around and waiting for the home run can win games against bad teams. When the playoffs come around, the pitching gets better, and opposing managers think through every decision a lot harder, we have seen the Yankees bats come up short.
Last season, the Yankees hit 222 home runs. It was the same amount the Cincinnati Reds and Tampa Bay Rays hit. However, New York scored only 711 runs while Cincinnati managed to score 786 times and the Tampa Bay had 857 runs scored.
Home runs are great but they are not everything. With a similarly-built roster as the one they had in 2021, we can expect the same problem to last all year long.
