Future British Open sites: Where is The Open Championship in 2023?

St. Andrews delivered a historic 150th Open Championship but now we look ahead to future British Open sites for the 2023 course and beyond. 

As if there was ever any doubt, playing the British Open in 2022 at the Old Course at St. Andrews has been phenomenal. For the 150th Open Championship, they needed somewhere historic to crown a historic champion and going to the home of golf was always the right call. And the golfers lived up to the moment as well.

From Rory McIlroy looking to end his eight-year major championship drought to Tiger Woods’ iconic walk up the 18th fairway in front of thousands of screaming and adoring fans, it was a tournament that won’t soon be forgotten.

But The Open Championship moves every year, meaning we’ll be somewhere else besides St. Andrews in 2023 and beyond. So let’s take a look at the future British Open sites for next year and even beyond that with some projections thrown in.

Future British Open sites: Where is the 2023 Open Championship?

The 2023 British Open will be held at historic Hoylake at Royal Liverpool Golf Club. This will be the first time the R&A has brought the championship there in nearly a decade as the last time it was played there was back in 2014. Fittingly, that tournament was won by Rory McIlroy, who was unable to defend the following year at St. Andrews due to an ankle injury.

Future British Open sites for 2023 and beyond

After heading to Royal Liverpool in 2023, the British Open has two official sites announced. In 2024, it’ll be a trip back to Scotland to play at Royal Troon, where The Open was last played in 2016 and won by Henrik Stenson. The year after, the 2025 Open Championship will be held at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, where Shane Lowry broke through and won back in 2019.

While they haven’t been announced beyond that, we can assume that St. Andrews — normally a host every five years but that was ruined due to COVID — Turnberry, Muirfield and Royal Lytham & St. Annes will be hosts in the following few years beyond 2025 in some order.
