Stetson Bennett IV matching Patrick Mahomes in Georgia’s dominant start
By John Buhler
Numbers don’t lie, as Georgia’s Stetson Bennett IV is pretty much Texas Tech Patrick Mahomes.
In Georgia’s 48-7 blowout of South Carolina, Bulldogs quarterback Stetson Bennett IV did something on the football field we have not seen since Patrick Mahomes played for Texas Tech.
Bennett completed 16-of-23 passes for 284 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions on the day. He also led the Dawgs in rushing with 36 yards on three carries and an 11-yard touchdown. Who cares if he is an undersized former walk-on? The Mailman is every bit a dual-threat playmaker running the UGA offense. How good is he? He’s playing like Mahomes did in Lubbock!
Bennett became the first quarterback since Mahomes did it back in 2016 to open a season with three straight games of 250-plus yards passing, as well as a rushing touchdown.
Georgia is pretty much quarterbacked by Patrick Mahomes in Stetson Bennett IV
Admittedly, it is weird to draw comparisons between Georgia’s former walk-on starting quarterback to the transcendent talent under center for Andy Reid’s Kansas City Chiefs. Although Bennett has no chance of being a first-round pick like Mahomes was in the 2017 NFL Draft, he has already won a national championship, is a lock to win the Burlsworth and could be picking up more hardware.
If Bennett keeps playing like this, he will get drafted and will be a part of some NFL team’s roster. At the start of the year, he was Georgia’s version of Ian Book, a talented college quarterback who would be a clipboard holder as some team’s day-three selection. However, he has the rest of the season to completely change the narrative. He is not a first-rounder, but he is a special player…
As long as Georgia keeps wiping the floor with the opposition, the legend of the Mailman will grow. He already delivered the post most spectacularly in the Orange Bowl vs. Michigan and in the rematch vs. Alabama in Indianapolis. Although Bennett does not have the talent of Mahomes, it is not about the size of the Dawg in the fight, but the size of the fight in the Dawg. He is a DAWG!!!
Here’s to Bennett making it four games in a row with 250 yards passing and a rushing touchdown.
