FDU gets awesome musical assist from Dayton in March Madness
By Jakob Ashlin
The Dayton Flyers stepped in to give the band-less FDU Knights an awesome musical assist during their magical March Madness run.
The Fairleigh Dickinson Knights made March Madness history on Friday, as they became only the second No. 16 seed in NCAA Tournament history to defeat a No. 1 seed.
The Knights defeated the Purdue Boilermakers 63-58 in the First Round. Wooden Award finalist Zach Edey was fantastic for the Boilermakers, recording a game-high 21 points (7-11 FG), 15 rebounds, and two blocks. However, FDU was able to contain his teammates, as the rest of the team shot a combined 28.6 percent from the field.
Unsurprisingly, the previously unknown Fairleigh Dickinson made headlines following their historic win.
Dayton’s band represented FDU during the NCAA Tournament
There is one interesting storyline from their tournament run that has flown under the radar. FDU does not have a band. So, Dayton’s band stepped in and represented FDU.
According to ESPN’s Jake Trotter, Dayton’s band learned FDU’s fight song only minutes before Friday’s game. They also picked up some plastic swords from Party City to help cheer on the Knights.
The game was played in Columbus, OH, which is about an hour away from the University of Dayton.
This is an incredible gesture by Dayton. The two schools are not affiliated. They are in separate states and are nine hours apart.
The act of kindness appeared to help FDU. Their upset victory on Friday was their first Round of 64 win in program history.
Unfortunately, their run ended in the Round of 32, as they lost to No. 9 FAU 70-78 on Sunday night. FAU will take on No. 4 Tennessee in the Sweet Sixteen.
