Aledmys Diaz finding a backup role with A’s

With Jeremy Pena’s emergence at shortstop for the Astros, All-Stars Jose Altuve at second base, and Alex Bregman at third base, Diaz was left without a consistent job in Houston. Diaz signed a two-year deal worth $14.5 million to play with the A’s. He’s secured a role as a backup shortstop, second, and third baseman. He’s also snagged some playing time in left field.

But, a lack of consistent playing time has led to a decline at the plate. In 24 games, he’s had 12 hits, including two doubles, a home run, and five RBI. He’s slashing a dismal .143/.217/.202 with an OPS of .420. This isn’t bad for a backup. At one time, Diaz was a top prospect with the Cardinals organization.

Diaz netted himself an excellent deal for a backup infielder. It would be great to see him earn more playing time, as the A’s could use a player with his potential.
