The San Francisco 49ers have officially agreed to trade Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs, according to FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer. The 49ers will reportedly receive a second-round pick this year and a similar pick in the 2014 NFL Draft in exchange for Smith. It is a trade that has been rumored for the past few days and was expected to be complete. On March 12, it will become official.

Glazer passed along the report on Twitter today:

The move cannot be official until the new league year begins on March 12. It is a big move for the Chiefs and will allow the team to focus on selecting a left tackle with the first overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Kansas City’s choice will now likely come down to Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel or Central Michigan’s Eric Fisher.

An interesting 49ers note: San Francisco will now have extra draft picks to package in a potential deal for New York Jets star cornerback Darrelle Revis.

What do you think of the Chiefs decision to acquire Smith? Many fear that this could be the team committing to mediocrity, but don’t be surprised if they use a pick later in the draft for a developmental quarterback prospect.
