Ah yes, nothing like a little Alex Rodriguez steroid scandal to sprinkle on top of an already intense Boston Red Sox – New York Yankees rivalry, right?
The two teams squared off tonight in Beantown with fireworks starting just moments later.
During Rodriguez’s first at-bat, Red Sox starting pitcher Ryan Dempster threw behind A-Rod, sending a clear message. Two more inside pitches followed before Dempster purposely plunked the Yankees third baseman on the 3-0 count. Rodriguez kept his cool but the same couldn’t be said for Yankees manager Joe Girardi who rushed onto the field and blew a gasket in regards to home plate umpire Brian O’Nora, who refused to throw Dempster out of the game.
The game continued on before Rodriguez got his revenge, blasting a monster home run off Dempster just a few innings later. The Yankees slugger, clearly impressed with himself made sure to take a few extra moments rounding the bases, finishing his journey with an extended stop at home plate.
It was an epic troll job.
With seven games remaining between the two clubs, I’m pretty sure we haven’t heard the last of this drama.
And yes, Girardi is saying exactly what you think he’s saying.
