A day after telling the media that the New England Patriots and head coach Bill Belichick must have done something illegal to steal the signals of the Houston Texans, Texans defensive end now telling reporters that he was joking.  It remains to be seen if the NFL is going to buy that explanation as the reporters who covered Smith’s statements were pretty convinced he was serious.  The Patriots scored 27 points in the second and won the game 34-31.

Whether there is any truth to this or if Smith is trying to deploy a ‘just kidding’ parachute after jumping out of a plane with some heavy accusations against Belichick and the Texans is hard to say.  It is also unclear how the NFL is going to approach this situation.  Kidding or not at the time, Smith’s statements were extremely controversial and drew a reaction, causing many to think back to the Patriots issues with Spygate.

The Patriots brought that on themselves by engaging in Spygate and there are probably people who were inclined to believe Smith as a result, which may cause the NFL to look at this more seriously.  The league office will likely be talking to Smith if they have not already.
