After much debating over the weekend and with talks going almost up to the franchise tag deadline, the Washington Redskins have announced that they’ve placed their franchise tag on defensive stud Brian Orakpo. ESPN’s Adam Schefter passed the news along on Twitter.

Washington slapping the tag on Orakpo was an expected outcome, even if there was some doubt earlier in the day as to what the Redskins’ intentions were. It’s not a cheap decision to tag Orakpo, but it’s one the team felt they had to make since long-term contract talks weren’t really going anywhere.

It’s still possible for the Redskins to work out a long-term deal with Orakpo, but there’s a deadline for that as well. If the Redskins and Orakpo don’t come to a long-term agreement in time, then the defensive end will be on a one-year deal that the Redskins will be playing a pretty penny for.

There’s hope that placing the tag on Orakpo bought the team some time, but a deal still needs to be worked out of Orakpo wants to stay in Washington beyond 2014.
