As the Arizona Cardinals finalize their plan for next week’s NFL Free Agency period, they have begun negotiations with a number of their 15 unrestricted free agents. One of those players is outside linebacker Matt Shaughnessy.

According to Shaughnessy’s agent, Rich Rosa, the team is “actively trying to re-sign” Shaughnessy before he hits the open market.

“They are actively trying to re-sign him,” Rosa told the Arizona Republic. “He wants to be there, so we’ll see how it goes.”

Shaughnessy started in 12 games for the Cardinals in 2013 and has proved to be a reliable edge player on the defense. Last season, he recorded 36 tackles, three sacks and one forced fumble.

Arizona would have plenty of time to sign Shaughnessy, who would likely be in the second tier of players available on free agency, but it never hurts to get out a head and begin executing your offseason plan as soon as you can.
