Over the past week, new Miami Dolphins running back Knowshon Moreno has been a very small part of the team’s minicamp session. It has led many to speculate over what could be going on, however it appears there’s a logical reason for his lack of participation.

More from Miami Dolphins

According to Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun Sentinel Moreno is battling a health issue. A source indicated to Kelly that the former Denver Bronco running back hasn’t been 100 percent healthy for awhile, yet not a lot about the alleged injury is being divulged:

"The source wouldn’t go into specifics about the injury, but said Moreno has been hindered by it for a couple of weeks and needs time off to recovery"

Moreno signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Dolphins after leading the Broncos with 1,586 yards and 13 touchdowns. However, since his signing he’s spent most of his time buried on the depth chart behind last year’s starter Lamar Miller and second option Daniel Thomas.

According to Kelly’s report, even Mike Gillislee and Damien Williams have gotten reps with Miami’s first and second team units.

Yet head coach Joe Philbin refused to say anything negative about Moreno when asked by the media.

“Knowshon’s had a good camp. He brings a lot of energy into the building every single day. He’s very good in the meeting rooms,” Philbin said of Moreno. “He’s picked up the system well and he’s competed hard on the practice field.”

There are just six weeks between the end of minicamp and the start of training camp, so it will be a tight timeline for Moreno to get himself healthy and back in playing shape. He needs to do that in order to not remain buried on the Dolphins’ depth chart.
