With Matt Cain going on the DL, and maybe not coming off the DL for awhile if his cranky elbow doesn’t quiet down, you have to wonder if the Giants might not ramp up efforts to acquire another starting pitcher ahead of the trade deadline.

More from Boston Red Sox

Bob Nightengale speculated about this very thing, and threw out a name that he thinks might make sense in San Francisco.

Peavy played for Bochy in San Diego, and a reunion might make a lot of sense. The Giants could use a veteran arm and Peavy, though he says he likes Boston, could probably use a change of address.

Peavy is only 1-8 on the year with a not-great 4.59 ERA and really-not-great 1.411 WHIP, but throw those numbers out if you move Peavy back to the National League and into a pennant race.

Placing Peavy in San Francisco on that staff in that environment could well revitalize him. The Giants could use another arm, and it’s never bad to have a gritty, gutty veteran like Peavy on the staff.

It all depends on Cain’s prognosis. If that elbow doesn’t want to calm down, Peavy to San Francisco could become a reality.
