Jake Peavy was traded Saturday to the San Francisco Giants, and he might not be the only Red Sox pitcher heading west. Per ESPN.com, the Los Angeles Dodgers have had discussions with the Red Sox about left handed pitcher Jon Lester.

More from Boston Red Sox

ESPN’s Gordon Edes says the Lester discussions have not progressed very far as of yet.

Lester, a free agent after the season, has been unable to work out an extension with the Red Sox, and has asked that contract talks be tabled until after the season. He has also reportedly said that he is open to re-signing with the Red Sox next year even if traded.

The Dodgers already have a nice rotation with Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Hyun-Jin Ryu and Dan Haren, but it’s probably one great arm away from truly formidable. Lester would give the Dodgers a championship rotation.

Renting Lester for the remainder of the season makes sense for the Dodgers if they truly believe this is their shot. The Dodgers have also been mentioned in connection with Rays ace David Price, but with the Rays playing better of late, Price may not be available.

When all is said and done, the race in the NL West could be decided by which team is able to make the splashiest deadline deal. Jon Lester would be a hell of a get for the Dodgers, way more impressive than Jake Peavy for the Giants.
