The San Francisco Giants have had a woeful time filling in their hole at second base this season and in the most desperate of fashions, extended a hand to Dan Uggla just days after he was released by the Atlanta Braves.

More from MLB

Uggla, who has been terrible for a few seasons now didn’t get much interest on the open market, but with an opening in the infield it seemed as if the San Francisco Giants presented the perfect opportunity for the struggling second baseman to revive his career.

After a few days at Triple-A Fresno, Uggla was called up by the Giants after a series of injuries and he promptly laid multiple duds, failing to register a hit and striking out multiple times in a pivotal three-game homestand. To make matters worse, he made three errors in the infield.

The San Francisco Giants front office decided to send Dan Uggla back down to Fresno, but apparently his pride is too good for that as the veteran denied their ‘request’ (something he has a right to do given his seniority), making him a free agent.

It’s pretty hard to think that Dan Uggla would have declined such an option if he didn’t have intentions of signing elsewhere, though at this point it’s unknown what his next step will be.

After looking nothing short of pathetic during his previous stint with the Braves and Giants, it would be shocking to see another team take a chance on him this season – though stranger things have happened.
