Samsung unveils new Nook

Barnes and Noble entered the LCD tablet space a few years ago with their own entrant, the Nook.

More from Technology

It was showcased at nearly every brick and mortar Barnes and Noble store across the country.  Now, Samsung has since absorbed the technology and unveiled a new Nook based off of the Galaxy Tab 4.

Barnes & Noble CEO Mike Huseby was center stage as he unveiled the new and improved Nook.

“We’ve joined together to bring to life the very best Nook yet,” Huseby said. “It’s the first-ever full-featured Android tablet that’s optimized for reading.”

Samsung president Tim Baxter said, “Anyone familiar with Samsung tablets will recognize our core competencies shining through.”  With the Galaxy Tab 4 Nook, readers will experience the first Nook tablet to feature a forward facing camera.

The newest Nook will still handle books, games, music, and movies just like competing tablets, however it is somewhat smaller and less powerful than previous iterations.

The Galaxy Tab 4 Nook will retail for $170 after a $20 rebate, and will come preloaded with $200 worth of content.  Barnes and Noble stores will still offer free Wi-Fi in stores for Nook owners, as well as helping with set-up and support for the product.  Also while in store, Nook owners will be able to read books for free.

The Galaxy Tab 4 Nook is already available for sale at Barnes and Noble and online.

While the change for the new Nook offering isn’t groundbreaking, bringing Samsung into the fold should help out Barnes and Noble in the long run.  One downside however is the clunky name thanks in part to Samsung implementing part of their product into it.
