Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel generated plenty of attention following his second preseason game when he chose to flip the middle finger to the Washington Redskins bench.

While some believe that gesture may have cost Manziel an opportunity to win the team’s starting quarterback job — which was awarded to Brian Hoyer two days later — it has been confirmed that one thing the middle finger did cost Johnny Football is some cash.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the NFL league office has fined Manziel $12,000 for his choice of finger on Monday Night Football.

The conversation probably went a little something like this:

That middle finger inspired some clever shirts from Browns fans and even a hilarious foam finger that was created by some trolling Pittsburgh Steelers fans.

Browns head coach Mike Pettine wasn’t as entertained by the middle finger.

Pettine chose Hoyer over Manziel because of his maturity and leadership, which is something that Manziel will need to work on as the season goes on if he wants an opportunity to take over as the starting quarterback at any point during his rookie season.
