Jones went 1-11 in his first season in 2008, including an 0-8 record in Conference USA but quickly turned the program around, winning Conference USA the next two seasons with eight and seven-win seasons, respectively.

SMU continued to be a solid team in the conference the following two years despite failing to win another conference title, Jones still led the team to another eight win season 2011 and a seven-win season in 2012.

The team struggled last year and missed a bowl game for the first time since his first year, finishing with a  5-7 record and started this season with tough two losses. SMU lost 45-0 to Baylor in the opener and 43-6 in Week 2 against North Texas.

After the loss to North Texas, Jones said, “We’re a long way from where we need to be.”

SMU will hold a press conference on Monday evening to discuss the resignation from Jones and what the next step will be and who will assume the head coaching duties in the interim.

Jones had a 36-43 career record at SMU and a 3-1 bowl record. For his career he has a 112-84 mark including his nine seasons with the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors where he had a 4-2 record in bowl games and played in the Sugar Bowl after going 12-1 in 2007. He has a 22-36 record in parts of four seasons in the NFL.
