Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said the team has done “everything we can” to make sure outfielder Allen Craig’s foot isn’t an issue going into 2015. Craig was one of the National League’s best hitters from 2011 to 2013, but was one of the worst players in Major League Baseball this season, and didn’t show much improvement when the Red Sox acquired him and Joe Kelly in exchange for starting pitcher John Lackey at the trade deadline.

Craig went on the disabled list shortly after he was acquired by Boston when he hurt his left ankle running over first base on August 1. He returned August 21 and was worse than he had been with the Cardinals. In 29 games and 94 at bats with the Red Sox, Craig slashed .128/.234/.191 with a home run and three doubles. He grounded into three double plays in his time with Boston, giving him 14 total on the year.

St. Louis extended Craig before the 2013 season, and he could prove to be a bargain yet, if he can return to the type of production he had before this season, but he was limited in the 2013 postseason with a similar left foot injury, and there’s some thinking that Craig hasn’t been the same player since he was hurt. He turns 31 during the 2015 season, and no matter if Craig is on the way back up or if he’s on his way out, the Red Sox are on the hook for at least $25 million dollars across the next three seasons to him.
