The New York Jets were getting slaughtered last Sunday against the San Diego Chargers. Second-year quarterback Geno Smith completed just four of 12 passes for 27 yards and an interception before head coach Rex Ryan decided to bench Smith and put in veteran Michael Vick.

Most assumed Vick would be lingering on the bench for a moment like this and once he got his opportunity, Vick would seize it and Smith would be benched for as long as Vick was successful.

Against  the Chargers though Vick did anything but seize the opportunity.

“Maybe I didn’t prepare or I wasn’t prepared, but I’ll tell you what, it won’t happen again,” Vick said, via the New York Post.

Vick finished the game with 8-of-19 passing for 47 yards, a stat-line barely better than Smith’s.

“I learned a lesson last week: always stay ready, always be prepared,” Vick said. “That left a bitter taste in my mouth that I wasn’t able to go out and put points on the board or even help this team in any fashion. So this week has been a different work week from me (and) throughout the rest of the year, it’s going to be totally different for me as far as my preparation.”

After the game Ryan announced that Smith would remain the team’s starting quarterback, at least for another week depending on how he performs.  It will be interesting to see how Smith responds in their upcoming game against the Broncos, a team that could take a huge lead early and hold the Jets scoreless and possibly force Vick back into the line up.
