Counting Toronto’s first goal still resulted in a Montreal victory on Wednesday

Dear Brandon Kozun,

I know those feels. At least you made a valiant effort, Brandon. Ultimately, players make mistakes like this every day- and you’re a rookie. It happens to the best of us, and it happened to you.

Of course, had the goal not counted, no one would remember this. The refs allowed the point, though, putting you down in history as scoring your first goal illegitimately. Plus, you play for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and they’re always under scrutiny for something or another.

Scoring your first goal in your first-ever game is exciting, though. Having that first game be the team’s season opener? Even more exciting. I wish I could say I’d done the same, but I’ve never really been on the goal-scoring side of things.

What I find really strange about this, of course, is that everything was being determined using the helmet cam that the ref wore throughout the game. It helped determine the final two goals, why couldn’t they use it on yours? (Answer, I’m sure, is something along the lines of “he wasn’t facing that way, but it’s a nice question to ask).

Better luck next time, new Leafs guy.
