The Calgary Flames signed winger Mason Raymond to a three-year deal over the offseason in the hopes of adding some veteran offense to a young, growing core. What they got in their second game of the season exceeded all expectations as Raymond scored three goals in a 5-2 victory at the Edmonton Oilers. Just don’t expect to hear much from Raymond about the goals. He’s focused on the team grabbing its first win of the season.

“Those two points were huge for us,” Raymond said via TSN. “It got us in the win column and trending in the right direction. We let them back into it after a good start, but we battled back hard and that showed some character.”

Raymond opening the scoring with a tip-in goal early in the first period, then scored two in the third period to ice the Oilers. It was a strong sign for Calgary, which is still trying to find its way after a brutal 2013-14 campaign which saw the team finish with the third-worst record in the NHL.

Things appear to be trending upward for at least one night for the Flames, who signed Raymond after he netted 19 goals and 45 points in 82 games played with the Toronto Maple Leafs last season. Raymond’s resurgence earned him a three-year deal worth more than $9 million. For now anyways, it appears he’ll do wonders toward earning that paycheck.
