The St. Louis Cardinals are concerned with ace Adam Wainwright’s work load, and will discuss potential options to reduce the number of pitches Wainwright throws in the 2015 season.

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said thinking of ways to reduce the workload of ace right-hander Adam Wainwright is “a worthy offseason discussion,” as Wainwright has failed to complete the fifth inning in his second consecutive start during Game One of the NLCS. The Cardinals lost to the San Francisco Giants, but were able to tie the series in Game Two with a 5-4 victory.

Wainwright has been one of MLB’s best starting pitchers, but dealt with elbow tendinitis earlier this season, and struggled in August as a result. Though Wainwright looked better in four September starts, the MLB playoffs have been a mixed bag for him this year, though Wainwright blames faulty delivery mechanics for the problems.

Mozeliak said the team doesn’t see any surgery needed in Wainwright’s short-term future, but a further reduction in spring training work, two-week “rest periods” during the season, or potentially even having a swingman starter for basically a six-man rotation. The Cardinals boast some impressive arms in relief who were originally starters, such as Carlos Martinez, and could give one of the kids a start here and there to keep the stress off Wainwright’s arm.
