When the New York Knicks convinced star forward Carmelo Anthony to return to the New York Knicks in the offseason, they obviously presented a plan to acquire other stars to him. With both Amar’e Stoudemire and Andrea Bargnani set to come off of the books after this season, that plan could be to pursue a max free agent in the offseason.

Memphis Grizzlies’ center Marc Gasol, who has expressed his desire to remain in Memphis, may be the top player available in the NBA come 2015.

Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders believes Marc Gasol would be a great fit for the Knicks.

"Marc Gasol immediately comes to mind. He would be perfect alongside Carmelo Anthony and he would thrive in the triangle offense. If I’m Phil Jackson, he’s my number one target. I’d have Pau Gasol calling him every single day telling him how great Phil was and how it helped his career."

Kennedy is obviously referring to Pau Gasol’s time playing for the Los Angeles Lakers under Phil Jackson where he won three Western Conference titles and two NBA titles. Marc Gasol isn’t Pau Gasol offensive but the former Defensive Player of the Year is a far better player on that end. Pairing Marc Gasol with Carmelo Anthony could make the Knicks a legitimate contender in the Eastern Conference.

Marc Gasol went for 14.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.3 blocks and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 47.3% from the field, 18.2% from beyond the arc and 76.8% from the free throw line in 59 games last season. In his career, he’s averaged 13.5 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.5 blocks per game while shooting 51.2% from the field, 15.2% from beyond the arc and 74.9% from the free throw line.
