Andrew Luck is the only NFL QB who has a shot to beat Peyton Manning’s TD record.

Now that Peyton Manning has broken Brett Favre’s passing touchdown record, it’s time to take a look at who could be the next to break the record that Manning now holds.

Are there any quarterbacks at this point in time currently playing in the NFL that could catch up to Manning at some point and break his record?

At this point in time, there simply aren’t too many options to choose from. Aaron Rodgers is likely a bit too old to catch him but still has a chance, and both Tom Brady and Drew Brees are without question too old. Those three quarterbacks are the truly “elite” quarterbacks that are playing right now, but none of the appear to have a chance at breaking Manning’s record.

There is one name that comes to mind when thinking of potential quarterbacks that could break the record, and that name is Andrew Luck.

Both Luck and Manning have so many similarities it is a bit creepy to compare the two next to each other. First of all, Luck was compared to Manning come into the NFL Draft due to his football IQ, arm strength, and his accuracy. Luck has had very similar seasons in his first two years as to what Manning had in his first couple of seasons, and of course Luck is playing for the Indianapolis Colts.

Indianapolis has built an impressive offense around their new franchise quarterback, and it is paying off this season. Luck has T.Y. Hilton, Reggie Wayne, and Hakeem Nicks as his top three wide receivers, and both Dwayne Allen and Coby Fleener are more than capable tight ends. Wayne is closing in on the end of his career, but is still very productive when on the field.

Hilton is the player that will continue growing with Luck as both players gain more experience and improve. Allen and Fleener are both young as well, and have plenty of room to improve their own games. Perhaps the least talked about target that Luck has on the roster is rookie Donte Moncrief, who could end up being the best receiver that the Colts have on their roster when everything is said and done.

At just 25 years of age, Luck still has plenty of elite football left to play in his career. Assuming he doesn’t suffer any major injuries, there is no question that he could catch Manning later on in his career. Cases could be made for Russell Wilson as well, but he simply doesn’t have the necessary targets at this point in time.

It will be very intriguing to see how Luck’s career continues to unfold over the next few years. He has the potential to be the same type of quarterback and difference maker that Manning has been throughout his career, and he has the same type of work ethic as well. The Colts are very happy with their decision to move on from Manning in favor of Luck, and they believe that they have found their “second Manning” so to speak.

Obviously there is a chance that no one that is currently playing in the NFL will catch Manning’s record, but Luck appears to have the best chance of the current quarterbacks in the game. He has the potent offense and he has shown the talent to make something like that happen.

Expect to see Luck continue to improve and become more and more like Manning over the next few seasons. If he stays healthy and continues to have the same type of potent offense that he is working with now, he definitely has a chance to make a run at Manning’s record.
