Outfielder Nick Markakis and the Baltimore Orioles are reportedly working on a multi-year deal as the MLB off-season heats up.

Nick Markakis is one of those guys who you just can’t imagine playing for another team. Whether you are a fan of the Baltimore Orioles or not, you would find it jarring to see Markakis in anything other than an Orioles’ cap.

The Orioles opened their off-season by declining a $17.5 million option for Markakis next season. That’s such a big figure that it comes as no surprise that the Orioles would still like to bring Markakis back, just on a differently structured deal.

Sure enough, Edwardo Encina of the Baltimore Sun writes that the Orioles and Markakis are working on the terms of a multi-year deal:

"The sides have yet to agree to terms and it’s unclear whether they will come to an agreement before Markakis hits the open market on Monday at midnight, but it is believed the Orioles and Markakis are currently working on the framework of a deal."

Encina also passes along the following thoughts from Buck Showalter on the team’s prospects with Markakis:

"“I think we’re going to keep working on it until we get something done,” Showalter said. “Usually those things have a way of working themselves out.”"

Markakis has played all nine of his career seasons with the Orioles. He batted .276/.342/.386 in 2014 as one of the key players on the division-champion Orioles in 2014. Pending an unexpected change in the proceedings, it seems likely that Markakis will return and will remain one of the faces of the Orioles’ franchise for 2015 and beyond.
