The Oklahoma City Thunder plan to match any Reggie Jackson offer sheet next summer, if they can.

Reggie Jackson is going to be hitting free agency this upcoming summer, but his current team isn’t going to let him walk without a fight.

If the words of Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix are true, upcoming restricted free agent will be a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder come 2015 as sources tell him the Thunder are prepared to match any offers Jackson may stumble across in free agency.

As Mannix mentions, it looks as if the Thunder are attempting to avoid another James Harden situation, one they’ve yet to completely bounce back from as Kevin Martin left the following summer and Jeremy Lamb, a player drafted from a pick received in the trade, has yet to pan out as a player. The lone bright spot from the Harden trade to the Houston Rockets? Steven Adams looks to be a solid center in the NBA.

With Jackson, the decision may be a bit easier. This summer Kendrick Perkins’ $9 million salary and Nick Collison’s $2 million salary will be off the books, basically creating room to fill in a deal for Jackson that could stretch from $8 to $10 million depending on what his agent demands. With Harden, the Thunder were worried about crossing the luxury tax threshold. That won’t be a factor here.

The real question is whether Jackson wants to return to the Thunder. He has made it now that at some point in his career, he wants to become the primary ball-handler for some team. With Russell Westbrook around, that won’t be a feasible task in Oklahoma City though the role Harden left vacant two years back is available  for him.

Drafted by OKC in 2011, Jackson averages 15.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 4.0 assists for his career.
