Michael Sam, the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL, is a GQ Man of the Year for 2014.

Michael Sam is adding another piece of hardware to his mantle. The former SEC Defensive Player of the Year from Missouri has been named on of the Men of the Year by GQ magazine.

Michael Sam made history this year when he came out as being gay prior to the NFL draft. After months of debate on if the NFL was ready for its first openly gay player, Sam became drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round of the draft. Sam failed to make the roster in St. Louis out of training camp where the defensive line was already extremely talented and deep.

After being cut by the Rams, Sam signed with Dallas Cowboys as a member of the practice squad. He was later released by Dallas, and is currently a free agent.

During the preseason, Sam showed signs that he is talented enough to play in NFL, but team’s appeared to be reticent about signing Sam. Due to the historic nature of Sam’s presence in the NFL, He was closely followed by a large contingent of media personnel. Teams showed concern that this was too much of a distract for the other members of their team.
