New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick brushed off a compliment from New York Jets coach Rex Ryan, saying Ryan was just ‘buttering me up’.

If you think you’re going to outfox Bill Belichick even in the ‘pre-game psych out’ phase of an NFL game, you’ve got another thing coming. Don’t you dare compliment the ‘Chick before the game because he’s already game planned to neutralize that attack and turn the tables right back on you. Just ask New York Jets coach Rex Ryan, who dared call Bill Belichick a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

Well, maybe he is, Bill. Maybe Rex just so happens to admire your style and envy your success. After all, the Jets have little enough to play for in advance of their Week 16 tilt against the New England Patriots. Can’t we all just be civil in advance of this one?

We probably can, but that doesn’t mean Belichick and the Patriots plan to spare the Jets in their tear through the AFC. New England has won seven straight games against AFC foes and given the 3-11 mark for the Jets, that streak is on the verge of hitting eight when the two teams meet at MetLife Stadium.

So not another word, Rex. You quietly simmer and stew and hate the Patriots like you always do, and let Bill Belichick do his job without all this butter everywhere. Bill’s on a diet after all.
