The Atlanta Braves are moving on from their double Upton experiment and are finalizing a trade that will ship off outfielder Justin Upton to the San Diego Padres.

When the Atlanta Braves acquired Justin Upton not that long ago, they were supposed to use him as the centerpiece of a new dynasty. After al, Sports Illustrated even honored the Braves with a cover photo shoot featuring the Upton brothers and the unrelated Kate Upton, but that was pretty much the highlight of his tenure with the team.

After a failed attempt to make the Braves respectable, the team has traded Justin Upton to the National League and to San Diego Padres.

At first, the deal was involving mystery team that many thought was the Seattle Mariners.

As it turns out, the Padres swooped in out of nowhere to pull off another massive trade that further shifts the franchise int he right direction.

This is both depressing for Braves fans yet exciting for Padres fans who are watching their team wheel and deal to become contenders this season. Offseason victories are often times Fool’s Gold, but the Padres have added Justin Upton to a haul that has included Matt Kemp and Derek Norris.

With three All-Star caliber players added this offseason, the Padres are looking at being true contenders this offseason and it’s something that fans have been waiting years to see.
