Chicago Bulls guard Jimmy Butler says he doesn’t want to become a star in the NBA and would prefer to be a role player.

Few lights are shining brighter around the NBA than Chicago Bulls guard/forward Jimmy Butler.

An all-around talent who can not only make an impact on the offensive end but defensive as well, Butler is quickly emerging as a star in the league. The only problem? He doesn’t want that.

That’s the word from Jimmy Butler himself who told the Chicago Bulls’ website he’d prefer just to be a talented role player.

“I don’t want be a star,” Butler stated. “I just want to be a decent role player on a really good team. Whatever my team needs: If that’s scoring, rebounding, passing the ball or just playing defense, that’s my job on this team. Those guys are always looking for me to be successful. Whenever you have teammates like that who have confidence in you, it’s very easy to have confidence in yourself.”

While that’s a nice sentiment on the part of Jimmy Butler, the decision to be a star or not really isn’t on him. Sure, he can avoid the limelight by not actively participating in off the court activities that many superstars do, but his game is going to dictate how well known he becomes outside of the Windy City.

The better he continues to play the more famous he’ll become and the expectations will only continue to rise.

You have to wonder – has the scrutiny directed at Derrick Rose made Jimmy Butler be a bit more cautious in his desire (or lack of) to become a star in the NBA? Or is it simply something he’s just not interested in? Either way, he’s going to become a star if he continues to play at the same level, like it or not.
