Jim Tomsula was hired as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers earlier this week, but he could use some coaching up when it comes to giving interviews.

The San Francisco 49ers promoted defensive line coach Jim Tomsula to the head coaching position this week that was left vacated after the team and Jim Harbaugh parted ways. Harbaugh was wildly successful in his first three years in the city by the bay with three trips to the NFC Championship Game and a Super Bowl berth and was must-see tv when he met with the media.

Whether Harbaugh gave short and to the point answers to questions from the media or had some fun with their questions he was always a draw.

After this interview with Comcast Bay Area, I’m not sure you can say the same about Tomsula who may need to take some Media 101 classes to be a better guest for tv and radio appearances and give the media something to use.

Tomsula was absolutely flummoxed and befuddled by the questions being thrown his way and they weren’t even complicated in any way. This was a very basic interview trying to get to know Tomsula better and learn about his philosophy as a head coach and who he plans on adding as his offensive and defensive coordinator.

When asked who his offensive coordinator could be Tomsula just sat there and shook his head side to side and muttered out some sort of guttural sound without even giving an inkling to the type of offense he’d like in San Francisco.

When asked about defensive coordinator candidates he at least offered up a complete sentence without actually saying anything of consequence.

After stammering with a series of “yeah’s” and “uhh’s” he said, “I’m really not going to do that out of respect for those people.”

Okay, so he doesn’t want to play the name game. Fair enough.

But are you planning on running a 3-4, 4-3, what’s your style going to be, Jim?

“The style that fits our players.”

Great.

Well, how was your relationship with Jim Harbaugh?

“Great.”

Sounds like Tomsula is trying to imitate Bill Belichick, which is a great head coach to emulate, but even Belichick has found a way to be somewhat humorous and give the media answers to their questions even if he doesn’t elaborate with long-winded answers or energetic and impassioned responses like Herm Edwards or Rex Ryan.
