The Sacramento River Cats, the AAA Minor League affiliate for the San Francisco Giants, will apparently do anything for a little wacky publicity.

In Major League Baseball, the tradition of home whites and road grays was once upon a time a definite affair. It was clockwork for each team to be equipped with two jerseys, the ugly grays on the road and the familiar whites at home.

50 years ago, pinstripes were considered extreme.

Once the 1990’s moved along, however, teams in all sports started to tinker with alternate jerseys. It became a custom to wear alternate jersey’s at home, forcing the road team to wear whites. In the NHL it happened so often that the league finally made the whites the full-time mandatory road jersey.

I must say it took some adjustment to see my New York Rangers wear their blue-shirts at home.

Baseball jerseys have been lifted to another level.

There are alternate jerseys, extra jerseys and when multiple versions of hats are brought into the mix, madness breaks out. It takes an encyclopedia of clothing experts to keep track of all of the official clothing these 30 major league teams use.

When the farm-hands get the green-light from the big clubs to showcase their wacky clothing ideas, all hell breaks loose. It’s an opportunity for a little exposure, as well as increasing attendance.

The Sacramento River Cats, the triple-A affiliate to the defending champion San Francisco Giants, have announced one of their new wacky ideas.

On August 15th of the 2015 season, the River Cats will host a Legends of the Hidden Temple night, set with jerseys that the players will wear. If you’re unfamiliar with Legends of the Hidden Temple, it was a wildly popular show in the early 90’s on Nickelodeon.

The River Cats will be repping the Silver Monkeys team:

This idea only adds onto the movement of minor league teams bringing fans back to the nostalgic days of the 90’s. Recently the Brooklyn Cyclones, who are a single-A affiliate to the New York Mets, announced that they would be holding a Saved by the Bell night on June 24th as they’ll take on the Tri-City Valley Cats..

It begs the question: can AC Slater play short-stop for the Mets?
