The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been around for 40 years, and their patchy history is going to be honored this year with a jersey patch.

How do you package 39 years of disappointment and one Super Bowl into a celebration? Well, if you’re the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, you do that with a jersey patch, which is exactly what they plan on doing this season. TO honor their 40th year of existence, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be donning a 40th Anniversary jersey patch, giving fans a reason to buy a Bucs jersey for purposes other than burning it.

Here’s a look at the Buccaneers 40th anniversary patch they’ll be wearing this season to honor their time in the NFL over the years.

That time spent in the NFL has resulted in one Super Bowl in 40 years — which is a success rate slightly higher than two percent. That’s not really something to be proud of, but for much of the late 90s and early 2000s the Buccaneers had one of the most dominating defenses of all-time.

It’s that defense that pretty much the biggest point of pride for the Bucs and their fans and that’s going to dominate the 40th anniversary. There have been patches where the Buccaneers have things to be proud of outside of their defensive run in the 2000s, like Hall of Famer Lee Roy Selmon and running back Ricky Bell.

For the most part though, the Buccaneers are a miserable franchise clinging to their glory days of the recent past — days that they hope to resurrect in the near future.
