The Miami Marlins have named Dan Jennings as the new manager of the ball club. His mother asked him ‘Are you crazy?’

The Miami Marlins fired their manager Mike Redmond on Sunday after underachieving and disappointment became common themes in the locker room during his time with the ball club. Many were curious who the Marlins were going to sign, as the season is already two months underway. But the Marlins had a plan, and that was to hire someone within the organization who knew the players. General Manager Dan Jennings is going to take over as manager for the ball club.

Not the most popular decision either, especially within Jennings’ own family. His mother asked him if he had a temporary case of insanity, per The Score.

"“Even my mom, who I love, she asked me, ‘Are you crazy? Have you lost your mind?’,” Jennings said."

Well, maybe they might be a little bit. Jennings hasn’t coached a baseball team since the 1980s, and that was a high school team.

The difference between coaching high school and an MLB ball club is quite different. Jennings is sure to be under heavy scrutiny as the season progresses. I don’t even want to think about the first time he makes a mistake out there with a challenge call or pitching change.

But Jennings is certain he is right for the job and can do it sufficiently this year. The Marlins are 16-22 through almost two months of baseball, which makes the rest of the year pretty important considering they have already fallen behind in the standings. Miami is a team that many believed would really take a run at the National League playoffs in 2015. The Washington Nationals were expected to take the NL East with ease, but the expectation in South Beach was being competitive and perhaps playing in October. To this point, the only thing entertaining about the Marlins is Giancarlo Stanton, who continues to hit home runs approximately 6,583 feet.

Many are baffled by this decision of hiring a guy who hasn’t coached in 30+ years. Even the new manager’s own mother. If your mom isn’t supporting you, I’m not sure who will. Well, apparently the answer to that is the Marlins’ front office staff.
