Chile defeated Argentina in penalty kicks to win the Copa America Final, their first ever.

Chile and Argentina squared off in the Copa America Final on Saturday afternoon, Lionel Messi looking to end a 22 year drought for his country and Chile determined to win on their home turf. It was a toughly contested game with some questionable calls, or lack thereof, that couldn’t be settled through 120 minutes.

The game required extra time be it was nearly ended in stoppage time but Gonzalo Higuaín was a half a step too slow to put a low cross into the back of the net.

Ultimately the game went to penalty kicks with a giant monkey on Messi’s back. While the chance to win the game for Argentina at the end of stoppage time wasn’t entirely Higuaín’s fault, he made himself the scapegoat in extra time.

During penalty kicks Higuaín stepped up to the spot, beat the keeper getting Claudio Bravo to dive to the right. But Higuaín’s shot to the left side of the goal wasn’t on target sailing high above the goal.

With a chance to win on the line, Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez stepped up to the spot with a chance to win it for his country in front of a home crowd. Sergio Romero dove right, Sanchez rolled in a soft shot to the left guaranteeing it would find the back of the net and immediately took off to celebrate.

"THATS IT! @ALEXIS_SANCHEZ WINS IT FOR @LAROJA! #beINCopaAmerica #FinalCA2015 http://t.co/1WnHyaz7ZQ— beIN SPORTS USA (@beINSPORTSUSA) July 4, 2015"

It was Chile’s first Copa America win, and certainly has even greater significance taking place on their home soil. That is a feat that hasn’t been done in 14 years, when Colombia won in 2001.
