The Texas Longhorns choked in a big way against the Oklahoma State Cowboys, drop to 1-3 after 30-27 loss

Charlie Strong’s Texas Longhorns team came out flat against the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Saturday in Darrell K Royal Stadium. The Longhorns led by quarterback Jerrod Heard managed just three points out of the gate while the Cowboys and Mason Rudolph marched down the field quickly for two touchdowns. However, Texas began turning the tide by playing surprisingly stout defense and forcing the Cowboys, Rudolph specifically, into a bevy of turnovers and with Heard and Tyrone Swoopes both playing well on offense. That gave the Longhorns a three-point lead going into the half.

The second half shockingly turned into a defensive struggle between two Big 12 teams, something like a unicorn in the college football world. The Cowboys began keeping a spy on Heard to limit his rushing prospects out of the backfield while the Oklahoma State offense was largely inconsistent. However, the Cowboys managed a 98-yard drive in the third quarter to take a lead. But the Longhorns answered soon after with a pick of Rudolph that Holton Hill returned for a touchdown. That pick-six left Texas ahead by three going into the final 15 minutes, a score that held until the waning minutes of the contest. With a short field and the fortune of some penalties, including an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Strong, the Cowboys were able to drive down and hit the game-tying field goal.

Things got crazy in the final minutes of this one, though. Texas got the ball back, but failed to get a first down and they were forced to punt. Things went awry on the special teams side of the ball as the punter mishandled the snap and was left scrambling to get a kick off. The result was a two-yard punt that put the Cowboys back in field goal range. They then were able to convert on that field goal. The Longhorns got the ball back with six seconds remaining, but were stopped on the kick return and lost a heartbreaker.

Three Stars

1. Jerrod Heard didn’t blow anyone away on the stat sheet as he was held 150 yards passing and limited to just 3.1 yards per carry. However, he showed tremendous maturity in keeping things under control and limiting his turnovers so that Texas was in the game when it mattered.

2. Hassan Ridgeway was constantly causing problems for Mason Rudolph by getting penetration and had the sack leading to the fumble that he returned for a touchdown in the second quarter.

3. Mike Gundy was masterful in his coaching despite turnovers from his guys that put him in a bad spot. His move to put a spy on Heard and then to have timeouts to get the ball back at the end of the fourth quarter proved to be huge for his team in picking up the victory.

Highlights

Odds

With the Cowboys favored by three points heading into this game, the result obviously lead to a push. The two teams combined for 57 points, just missing the 59-point over/under.

Next Week

The Longhorns will travel to take on the TCU Horned Frogs next week as they try to avoid a disastrous 1-4 start.

Oklahoma State will look to stay undefeated as they are back home to face the Kansas State Wildcats.
