Little-known Chargers tight end John Phillips made an impossible one-handed catch

Tight end John Phillips played in all 16 games for the San Diego Chargers last season, but registered just one reception on his one target. That one reception went for a single yard. It’s Week 3 of the 2015 NFL season and Phillips has two receptions for the year and one of them is an early candidate for Catch of the Year.

As the Chargers took on the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, San Diego found themselves trying to get a drive going midway through the second quarter. That’s when Philip Rivers targeted Phillips on an out to the left sideline and Phillips reached out to make an unreal diving one-handed grab.

You may not have known who Phillips was before today’s slate of NFL games started, but you’re going to be seeing him on highlight shows and on social media for the rest of the season after that catch. Diving catches are impressive. One-handed catches are remarkable. But a man achieving both feats on one reception is absolutely jaw dropping to watch, especially from such an unknown player.

Phillips was released by the Chargers on September 5, but re-signed with San Diego just five days after originally being cut. After his catch today, I’m sure they’re thankful that they brought him back.
