Bowling Green dominated Northern Illinois to capture the 2015 MAC Championship

The MAC Championship game between the Bowling Green Falcons and the Northern Illinois Huskies was a mismatch from the get-go as the Huskies offense was severely banged up and starting a walk-on freshman in Tommy Fiedler, their third-stringer, at quarterback for this game. From the opening kickoff, that turned out to be exactly the case. Matt Johnson and the Falcons jumped on the Huskies early and didn’t let up as Travis Greene and Fred Coppet ran amuck over the Huskies defense. Bowling Green scored 28 unanswered points in the first half and went into the locker room at the break with a huge cushion.

That huge cushion got cut into a bit early in the second half, though. Northern Illinois was able to make some big defensive plays and Fiedler and the offense put together a drive that got the Huskies on the board. They then came up with their biggest defensive play of the night when Shawun Lurry picked off Matt Johnson on a beautiful defensive play and took it to the house to make a game of it with the score at 28-14 and the Huskies holding the momentum.

Unfortunately, Northern Illinois couldn’t maintain any of that momentum. Greene scored his second touchdown of the night in the fourth quarter and the defense picked off Fiedler twice more to secure the victory and the MAC Championship for the Falcons who will now await their bowl-season fate with a 10-3 record and an offense looking as dangerous as ever.

Three stars

Travis Greene was a monster in the Bowling Green rushing attack that really carried his team in this game. He ran the ball 29 times for 183 yards and two touchdowns on the night in a marvelous effort.

Fred Coppet was also huge for the Falcons in aiding Greene in the rushing attack. He carried the ball 16 times on his own, amassing 86 yards and a touchdown to his credit on the night.

Roger Lewis was the best target in terms of the passing game for Bowling Green as they captured the conference title. He caught six passes for 75 yards and had a trip to the end zone to his credit as well.
