The Florida Gators ran a terrible fake field goal in the Citrus Bowl.

Just when you think they’ve hit rock bottom, the Florida Gators’ special teams found a new low on Friday in the Citrus Bowl. With kicker Austin Hardin missing the game against Michigan, Florida was down to the leg of dental student Neil MacInnes.

Having been dealt such an unsavory hand, head coach Jim McElwain decided to fake a field goal on 4th-and-7 from the Michigan 20-yard line. Here’s the result.

For those scoring at home, that would be an interception charged to punter Johnny Townsend on the half-hearted shovel pass attempt.

Florida’s kicking game this past season has been nothing short of a septic tank wired with explosives – just spraying mess all over the field. Amazingly, the Gators haven’t had a consistent leg for a few years running. Will Muschamp’s teams lost plenty of close games due, in part, to an inability to put the ball through the uprights, and things haven’t gone much better for McElwain in Year 1.

With overmatched quarterback Treon Harris admirably attempting (and rarely succeeding) to run a competent offense, the holes in Florida’s kicking game have only been magnified. Luckily for fans of the team, McElwain and his staff have locked down Eddy Pineiro, the nation’s top-rated kicking recruit for 2016.
