According to a report, the San Francisco Giants have agreed on a deal with Denard Span.

The San Francisco Giants could soon be adding a little bit of speed and good contact at the plate to their lineup.

According to Jon Heyman, the San Francisco Giants are nearing a deal for free agent outfielder Denard Span. Span had been with the Washington Nationals, where he consistently hit for average at the plate and provided good speed on the bases.

His defense has seen a decline over recent years, but he’s still very much skilled at the plate and will provided some much needed offense at the top of the order for San Francisco if they complete the deal.

Ken Rosenthal reports that the Giants deal with Span is for three years and $31 million.

The Giants thus far this off-season have attacked their team needs by bolstering their starting pitching with a couple of big additions to their rotation in Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardzija. Now they are attacking some offense at the top of the order as they try to become World Series contenders once again in 2016.

The Giants were plagued by injuries last season to the rotation and thus far they have done a great job this off-season of adding depth to all those positions.

It will be interesting to see where exactly Span fits in with the Giants, as they already have Angel Pagan and Gregor Blanco, who can both play center field. This is certainly a depth move and a platoon move for San Francisco, as Span can move around the outfield.

It’s also a move that will be key as depth is needed for a very long season, which was the Achilles heel for the Giants in 2015.
