The Miami Heat are rumored to be in talks with the Sacramento Kings about Rudy Gay

The Miami Heat are one of the more interesting teams to watch leading up to the 2016 NBA Trade Deadline. Not only are they a team that has the potential to really make a move up the standings in the Eastern Conference down the stretch, but also a team with a number of assets that could be tasty for the right trade partner. Apparently the Heat are hoping that the Sacramento Kings might be interested in some of those assets in a trade that would involve Rudy Gay.

ESPN’s Mike Wallace said on a radio broadcast on Friday that he had heard that the Heat were in talks with a team from the Pacific Division about a trade that would improve them on the wings. When asked about it, Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders responded by saying that he was hearing that Kings forward Rudy Gay was at the center of those discussions:

The most intriguing part about this, though, is that Wallace mentioned that the Heat were looking for a wing who would improve their three-point shooting. If that is the case and they aren’t just looking for an overall upgrade on the wings, I’m not sure Gay is exactly the player they should be pursuing ahead of the deadline.

On the 2015-16 season, Gay is shooting only 33.1 percent from long range and is only 34.3 percent from beyond the arc for his career. He’s not a player that’s particularly known for his prowess as a perimeter scorer, so that his name would come up in that regard is a bit curious.

As noted by Kyler in saying that Gay was the name involved in these discussions with Miami, though, this seems like a deal that is a lot of posturing and feeling out on the part of the Heat. Even still, that it’s out there at this time of year in the NBA means it’s something worth keeping an eye on leading up to Feb. 18.
