NFL Rumors: Cowboys not interested in Johnny Manziel, yet

Johnny Manziel is a free agent after being cut by the Cleveland Browns, but that doesn’t mean the Dallas Cowboys are interesting in signing him.

Johnny Manziel has been a free agent for a few days after the Cleveland Browns released him following two troubled years quarterbacking their organization. The former Heisman Trophy winner from Texas A&M and first round pick of the 2014 NFL Draft is already out of the league due in large part to excessive partying.

While the Dallas Cowboys reportedly had interest in signing the dual-threat passer if he became a free agent this offseason, it seems that the Cowboys are going to hold back on bringing Johnny Football to Big D.

According to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys organization don’t plan on bringing Manziel in for a visit to potentially sign him “until he gets his life back in order.”

While size and off-the-field issues have been the two key components in derailing Manziel’s NFL career so far, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has shown a proclivity to some of the Lone Star State’s premier collegiate quarterbacks the last few years.

Dallas still has a perennial Pro Bowl passer in Tony Romo, but he’s getting up there in age and the Cowboys may need to proactively look for solutions to groom their next star under center. The Cowboys had considered possibly bringing in either Manziel or former Baylor Bears Heisman Trophy winner and Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin, III to backup Romo in 2016 and beyond.

Both dual-threat passers have obvious talent at playing quarterback, but it seems like even the Cowboys who have been known to bring in chaotic players to their organization won’t consider signing Manziel until he cuts back on the excessive partying. Jones is willing to give players second chances, but at this time Dallas is willing to give Manziel one until he’s willing to turn his life around.
