Matt Harvey gets the call to start the 2016 season for the Mets

Game 5 of the 2015 World Series was only a few months ago. New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey was on a roll, knocking down the dangerous Kansas City Royals lineup. When the ninth inning hit, the fans wanted to see Harvey finish what he started. Harvey also wanted to do so, imploring coach Terry Collins to keep him in. A reluctant Collins listened to his pitcher, and Harvey tried to be the hero. A few hits and a rally later, and the Royals won the World Series at Citi Field. That one inning shut down what was quite possibly a masterpiece by Matt Harvey.

It appears that “The Dark Knight of Gotham” will get to avenge that loss in a few weeks. Christmas has come early for Mr. Harvey. It was announced that Matt Harvey would start the 2016 baseball season for the Mets in Kansas City on Sunday, April 3rd.

Coming off of Tommy John surgery, Harvey defied expectations, earning him the NL Comeback Player of the Year Award. This season is another year removed from the surgery, and Harvey is looking to further his dominance. Known for his competitive demeanor on the mound, it is all but guaranteed he will make a statement against the team that took the Mets down during the World Series. Once their championship ceremony starts, the gloves will be off for Harvey.

What does this mean for the rest of the Mets rotation? Jacob deGrom will reportedly miss out on the first week of the season, due to the expected birth of his child. There is a possibility that Noah Syndergaard will start during the Mets’ home opener on April 8th against the Phillies. Let’s not forget about the ageless wonder Bartolo Colon, and the young Steven Matz. The best part is that due to the great rotation the Mets have, the possibilities are endless.

The Mets road back to the World Series begins in a few weeks. It starts with what could very well be a happy Harvey Day for all.
