Patrick Ewing would not have joined a ‘super team’

Patrick Ewing does not like “super teams”

“Super teams” are all the rage in the NBA. LeBron James joined Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami (then he left but who knows if he would leave again). Lebron came out recently and said he wants to play with Wade, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul at some point in his career.

Back in the 1990’s the New York Knicks just couldn’t get over the hump. Whether it was Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, Reggie Miller and the Indiana Pacers or Hakeem Olajuwon and the Houston Rockets, he and the Knicks were unable to get the elusive ring.  Nowadays, when Ewing hit free agency he would leave to join one of those guys or maybe force a trade if he was like a lot of players in the league now.

But, he’s not.

Ewing, now a Charlotte Hornets assistant coach, said he wouldn’t have tried to go the “super team” route and played with guys like Jordan or Larry Bird or Magic Johnson.

"“Probably not because we have so much of a great rivalry going against one another,” Ewing said. “Larry with his trash talking. Magic also with trash talking, also a great player. To win a championship, a lot of people are willing to do that.”"

He also doesn’t believe Lebron’s dream team is happening anytime soon.

"“(LeBron) befriending them or whatever you want to call it, that’s his prerogative,” Ewing said. “Even if he wants and thinks that he could play with those guys, I don’t see it happening. We all have dreams, and that’s his dream.”"

I think LeBron’s dream is possible, especially with a rising salary cap and guys willing to take pay cuts to win. It’s not like Ewing played with scrubs in his career — but no one close to the likes of Wade.  You have to wonder for Ewing if he had an opportunity to play with another star during that time what kind of numbers he would have put up.
